☕️ Espresso Troubleshooting
Espresso from Paradox coffeebar, Australia.
When making an espresso, we strive for the perfect balance between acidity, sweetness and bitterness.
You achieve that perfect balance by preventing any one of those factors from dominating the flavour.
We like to give you some tips that make setting the grinder a bit easier. This is a trial-and-error process. We highly recommend that you follow a course or workshop to become more knowledgeable about how to prepare espresso in a practical, hands-on way. Books, videos and blogs will only get you so far. But here are some tips to get you started…
1. Taste taste taste:
Is your espresso…
Too acidic (sour & sharp) > increase extraction time.
Too bitter (dry & overpowering) > decrease extraction time.
2. Only modify 1 factor at a time:
When adjusting the grinder, modify only 1 factor at a time; changing the weight and grind size simultaneously can lead to confusion and inconsistent results.
3.Use the double portafilter:
Always use the double portafilter to check the grinder. You achieve better water penetration and a higher extraction degree when using a double-dose holder instead of the single-dose holder.
4.Know your grinder:
After adjusting the grind size, discard two to three doses of ground coffee for the grind size adjustment to come into effect.
"Determining the degree of grind and thus the fineness of the coffee grounds, is the essence of espresso preparation."
